Coming up with creative solutions that meet user needs while meeting technical goals as well as business directives drives the synergy between the professions of industrial design and engineering.
Children learn through play. They also love bubbles!
The innocent wisdom of children is remarkable. Their naturally open-ended play spurs their creativity in an unending self-fulfilling loop of learning. Experiential exhibit design is a perfect dovetail with these endless curiosities and bubbles are the perfect segway between play and STEM related knowledge.

Designing engaging machines that make bubbles in novel ways all tie back to STEM related topics and create a truly unique experience that children engage with for hours of open-ended play.
A 600SF fully autonomous bubble exhibit with open architecture for observable mechanics and play-oriented learning.

Through the design of the Bubble Window machine, 4 structural iterations were explored with numerous smaller iterations in-between for solenoid placement, gear ratios, sliding rail systems, bubble troughs, and constant force hand-free play setups.
While this machine was elegant in principle, the never before created machine required a fully working 3D model was required to track the specific parts and assembly requirements.

Understanding the importance of usability with this machine, studies were conducted and researched for the proper balance of target users and their caregivers. This proved to offer a perfect play height that people of all abilities and heights could use.
For the base of this machine I used 80-20 extruded aluminum, along with many CNC milled aluminum plates, constant force springs, and bearing setups.
